Crain’s Cleveland Business Journal announces $2.7 million funding round for Augment Therapy

Augment Therapy, a software startup in Northeast Ohio that combines physical therapy and rehabilitative health care with augmented reality, has closed a $2.7 million seed plus funding round that will support its ongoing growth and development.

“The company really began with a pediatric focus,” said Augment CEO and co-founder Lindsay Watson. “And this raise will help us expand into other markets.”

Augment’s core offerings are the ARWell and ARWell Pro apps. The former is geared toward the average person—it’s available in the Apple App Store, and an Android version is in development—while the latter is designed more specifically for health care providers and their patients.

Watson likened the apps to a Snapchat filter: a user with the app open on a phone or tablet facing them can see themselves on their screen in a digitally augmented world.

The app guides users to do certain movements or exercises, and the digital world can react in kind. Moving a leg to a certain position could make it snow. Raising arms to a particular pose could make their on-screen character fly. Rewards that may be provided along the way further add to the gamification piece of the platform.
